It’s over the news. The Israel-Palestinian conflict that has escalated into a religious crisis even as Muslims around the world celebrate the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.
But what exactly is happening in Israel? You might have heard or seen different stories. Some are saying “Israelis are killing Muslims.” Some are saying the Palestinian Muslims shot rockets first and so on.
In short, it’s very easy to get confused by all the different accounts of events that you’ll find online.
Well, for those who care to know, here’s a simple and short breakdown of the whole situation.
A 100-Year-Old Crisis
Britain took control of Palestine, an area that was dominated by Arab and Jews after the first World War ended.
The crisis really began when Britain wanted to establish a “national home” for Jewish people in the inhabited land of Palestine.
This caused a lot of tension, and so a motion was moved in 1947 to establish two nations, one for the Jews and one for the Arabs, with Jerusalem being an international city. The Arabs opposed this move. They thought it was not favourable for them.
The British people left in 1948 and the Jews went on to create the state which is today known as Israel. The Arabs, angered by this decision, invaded the Jewish state and a war followed. By the end of the war, Israel had control of most of the territory.
This naturally led to decades of conflict between the Jewish state and the Palestinians, who are mostly Arab Muslims.
What Is Currently Happening?
The problem exactly is that Palestinians are claiming half of Jerusalem, and hoping it would be the capital of their future state, should they gain independence. Whereas Israel already claims the whole of Jerusalem as their capital.
On Monday, the Israeli police and Palestinians clashed at a holy site in Jerusalem called Haram al-Sharif. These clashes triggered the current fighting (which has actually become a war) between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza.
In the wake of the crisis, Hamas, a military organization that controls the Palestinian city of Gaza, demanded that police presence be removed from the holy mosque earlier this week before the clashes escalated.
When that didn’t happen, Hamas launched rockets into Israeli territory and it became a war.
Israel, who had intercepted hundreds of rockets with their Iron Dome, responded by launching missiles into some parts of Gaza. There have been reports of deaths and injuries on both sides.
Still, Hamas hasn’t stopped launching rockets into Israel. The Israeli Defense Force has also made it clear they won’t stop attacking Gaza either.
What Happens Now?
Well, unless you are in Israel or Gaza or anywhere close, you have nothing to worry about really. But it is clear now that this has nothing to do with Jews killing Muslims.
It is not a religious conflict at all and can only be resolved politically. In fact, there are Muslims and Arabs in the Israeli government and army. That makes the whole crisis even more complicated.
