Maryam Uwais, the special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, said some Nigerian children do not go to school because they cannot afford the 80 naira tax.
The number of children out of school in Nigeria is 20 million according to recent figures from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Statistics have shown that India, Nigeria, and Pakistan have the highest number of out-of-school children in the world between the ages of 6 and 18.
Speaking in an interview with Channel Television, Maryam said:
“We have a population that is growing faster than our economy, and we are not targeting the problems that are increasing numbers.
“There are a lot of differences. We need to determine the reason for these numbers. We need to be more strategic solve the problem.
“So it is essential to monitor the situation, to get back the causal factor.
