Nigerian police officers have taken over the National Secretariat of the Labor Party in Abuja.
The crisis within the party worsened on Thursday after seven members of the National Work Committee, NWC, appointed the National (Southern) Vice President, Lamidi Bashir Apapa, as the party’s interim chairman.
Apapa replaces the suspended president, Julius Aure.
Speaking after the emergency meeting, Apapa said the NWC members had acted in accordance with the Abuja High Court’s ruling, which banned Aber from running as national president of the LP.
Besides Aure, the court retained the secretary of state, Umar Farouk Ibrahim; national treasurer, Oluchi Opara; and Secretary of the National Organization Clement Ojukwu. Apapa told reporters that the NWC was also considering suspending party and exco members who had previously been suspended by the party leadership.
