The House of Representatives has asked the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) to develop a system to remove deceased voters from the voter register.
The chamber also called on INEC to develop a software platform where deceased families can report the deaths of loved ones, to help the committee identify that name and remove it from the database.
This follows a petition titled “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needs to clean up its dead and fictitious voter system,” presented by Hon during the plenary session. Leke Abejide.
Abejide, in his petition, commented that INEC had also published his deceased father’s name in the register:
“It was blinding in the last general election because the names of those who died still appear on the voter register, including my father, who passed away so long ago.”
“Millions of non-existent fictitious voters registered their names on INEC due to repeated registrations by Nigerians with the intention of rigging elections but with the introduction of a two-way voter recognition system (BVAS& #41; those without this face can no longer vote.” Bypassing the petition, the House of Representatives authorized its Election Commission to ensure compliance with the resolution.
