Attorney Kayode Ajulo said Saturday’s coronation of King Charles III was a good opportunity for those seeking a pardon on behalf of former Senate Vice President Ike Ekweremadu to do so.
Recall that PRESLOADED previously reported that Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison by a British court on Friday for conspiring to operate on a man’s kidney for his daughter.
Beatrice Ekweremadu was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, while Obinna Obeta, a doctor, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the same crime.
The defendants are accused of conspiring to arrange for a young Nigerian named David Nwamini to come to the UK to have his kidney extracted.
But Ajulo, a guest on the Channel’s Politics Today program on Friday, believes the letters were written: “by mistake”. He said it could be seen as an attempt to interfere with judicial processes, but offered a better solution.
“Now that Ekweremadu has been convicted, it’s time to do it (ask for forgiveness). Tomorrow, King Charles III will be crowned King of England, as head of State.
“There is such a thing as a royal pardon, I believe anyone who wants to write letters, anyone who wants to plead for Ekweremadu, now is the best time to claim the sovereignty of Great Britain; it was King Charles III of His Majesty pardoning Ekweremadu.
“The precedent goes back to 1717, and so did King George. In 2003 and even closer to 2021, the same thing happened. Sovereignty can do that and I think that’s the defense we have to give Ekweremadu, not to write and interfere in the operation of the court,” Ajulo said.
