Surrogacy: Mother Swindled To Sell Her Newborn For N185000 Instead Of Agreed N3m
The Lagos State Police Command has provided an update on the status of a mother, Fortune Obhafuoso, who planned to improve her life through surrogacy but was allegedly duped, with the baby being taken away from her.
Previously, Ben Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Lagos Command, revealed on Saturday that Obhafuoso alleged baby stealing because she was paid N185,000 instead of the N3 million initial agreement with the surrogacy dealers.
In an earlier report by Punch News on January 6, Obhafuoso described how she was able to settle for N15,000 after a Police officer, Samuel Ukpabio, threatened to never return for the child.
Obhafuoso, a 35-year-old mother of three, explained:
“All I want is my baby; I gave birth to him around 12.30am on Friday, December 23, 2022, and immediately named him Joseph. I only breastfed him once because I was arrested and taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, on the same day I gave birth to him.
“The last time I saw my newborn was at the SCID, where a police officer, Samuel Ukpabio, conspired with people pretending to help me to steal my baby.”
“Ukpabio advised me not to return to the station; if I did, my remaining two children would be taken away,” said the 35-year-old, who transferred her family to Lagos State from Benin, Edo State.
In response, the PR0, Hundeyin, posted on Twitter, “Investigation so far shows that the mother arranged to sell her baby for N3m. She went to the news and accused baby snatching because she barely received N185k after handing over her baby.
“She has resisted all invitations to appear in court to positively identify her co-conspirators and testify. Nothing can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court without her testimony and identification. As a result, there could be a miscarriage of justice.
