Following victories in the war against Boko Haram extremists, Nigeria has risen to sixth place in the current Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
The country fell two positions from fourth place, which it had held since 2017.
According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Nigeria, Syria, and Somalia are the only countries among the top ten most impacted by terrorism to increase their score from 2020 to 2021.
According to the research, the number of terrorism-related deaths in Nigeria has decreased.
The death of Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau, as well as the federal government’s attempts to combat the organisation, were cited as reasons.
“In 2021, total terrorism-related deaths in Nigeria declined to 448, the lowest amount since 2011.” When compared to the previous year, the number of people killed or injured as a result of terrorism has decreased by about half. However, between 2020 and 2021, the number of terrorist strikes grew by 49%. ISWA claimed responsibility for 36% of the assaults, Boko Haram for 8%, and the other 44% were not assigned to any organization.
“In 2020, ISWA overtook Boko Haram as Nigeria’s deadliest terrorist group. Boko Haram’s collapse continued into 2021, with the group accountable for only 69 killings, down 77 percent from the previous year.
This is the lowest number of deaths in a decade for the group. “Boko Haram’s demise has resulted in a significant reduction in terrorism in Borno State, which saw a 71 percent fall in terrorist deaths as compared to the previous year,” according to the study.
