Ngige Informs the NLC About ASUU’s Persistent Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been reported to the Nigeria Labour Congress by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.
In terms of reconciliation, Ngige accused lecturers of not following the rules of the Nigeria Labour Act.
The Minister made the remarks while urging the Nigeria Labour Congress to call the Academic Staff Union of Universities to order over its strike.
Ngige stated yesterday in Lagos at the opening ceremony of the 2022 edition of the National Labour Advisory Council that the current strike was not properly instituted.
The Ministry accused ASUU of failing to provide adequate notice before going on strike.
“So, I’m using this opportunity to plead with the NLC, to which ASUU is affiliated, to call them to order, make them obey the law, to let them know what the Trade Disputes Act says, and to abide by the law as university teachers who are even teaching industrial law,” he said.
“They should call the strike off.” That strike is not being carried out in a proper manner. I’ve reconciled and ensured that the issues in dispute have been dealt with decisively.”
Speaking further at the event, Ngige stated that the Nigeria Medical Association, as well as the National Association of Resident Doctors, are not trade unions.
“They’re labor unions,” the minister explained.
“University teachers are registered with the Academic Staff Union of Universities and are nominally affiliated with the Nigerian Labour Congress.” It isn’t because they don’t follow the Labour Act when it comes to conciliation,” Ngige emphasized.
