The administrators of the Ballon d’Or, France Football, have confirmed that this year’s event will take place in October 2022.
Instead of a calendar year, the 2021 Ballon d’Or will be awarded to the best player throughout a normal European season.
The Women’s Euros in 2022 will conclude the 2021-22 campaign, while the 2022 World Cup will be included in the 2022-23 awards.
France Football had previously declared that the Ballon d’Or would be changed.
The Ballon d’Or will henceforth consider players’ performances over the course of a season (August-July), rather than a calendar year (January-December).
This means the next edition will be for the season 2021/22, not 2022.
