Lesbianism: Police, Community Declare Joan Osato Osemwegie Wanted
Benin City — The Edo State Police Command has declared Joan Osato Osemwegie wanted over allegations related to same-sex conduct, which is criminalized under Nigerian law.
According to reports, the declaration dated December 17, 2023, followed a complaint allegedly originating from members of the Benin royal family. Sources indicated that before the police action, a traditional notice had allegedly been issued within the community, giving Osemwegie seven days to present herself in connection with customary rites.
Under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, same-sex relationships are prohibited and may attract penalties, including imprisonment.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed that Osemwegie had been declared wanted and appealed to members of the public to provide useful information regarding her whereabouts. He stated that the police were acting on complaints received and would proceed in accordance with the law.
There were also references to the involvement of the Benin monarchy. However, no official statement was directly obtained from the palace of Oba Ewuare II as of the time of filing this report.
Family sources alleged that Osemwegie is married to Prince Uyi Eweka, reportedly a member of the Benin royal family.
Authorities urged anyone with credible information to report to the nearest police station in Benin City.
