Kano Senate: Supreme Court orders INEC to replace Shekarau with Hanga

The Supreme Court ordered the Independent National Election Commission, INEC, to replace Ibrahim Shekarau with Rufai Hanga as the Kano Central senatorial candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP.

In Friday’s ruling by Judge Uwani Abba-Aji, the Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision that INEC recognized Mr. Hanga as a candidate.

INEC has declared Shekarau the winner of the February 25 presidential and parliamentary elections.
But the Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision recognizing Hanga as an NNPP candidate.

Shekarau gave up her NNPP ticket after defecting to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).  He joined the NNPP after leaving the Progressive All Peoples Congress (APC) due to a crisis with the party leadership.

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the NNPP and its presidential candidate, welcomed Shekarau and his supporters into the party, but the two quickly parted ways.

On Tuesday, Shekarau announced her rejection of the certificate of return issued by INEC as a senator elected under the NNPP.
