It Doesn’t Makes Sense To Swear In Tinubu Because His Victory Is Being Challenged In Court – Cardinal Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekan,  former Archbishop of Abuja, said it was unfortunate that the Presidential Electoral Court had been slow to rule on cases challenging the victory of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Cardinal Onaiyekan revealed this Thursday in an interview on the Television Channel monitored by NAIJALOADED.

Recall that the Independent National Election Commission declared Tinubu the winner of the presidential election after garnering more than 8 million votes.

However, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labor Party are challenging Tinubu’s victory in court.

The court recently announced that it will begin on Monday, May 8. However, the archbishop blamed the delay in opening the court.

However, he added that he is still waiting for the court’s decision to determine the winner of the election.

“The election is not yet over. There are cases in court that have not been disposed of. That is why we are in an anomalous situation; we have a declared President-elect whose result is being challenged, and the court is handling it.

“I am entitled to take the position that I am still waiting for the court to determine who won the election.

“I am one of those who have been saying that it does not make much sense to swear in people when they are still in court.

“We have to review the election process to ensure we have a winner who will be sworn in and everybody would rally around.

“I can’t understand; I am not a legal man or judge; it is a pity that it is taking too long for the Court to make up their mind on this matter”,

He said.

It is over 65 days since the Presidential election was conducted on February 25th, 2023.
