Kwara State University, also known as KWASU, is a public university located in Malete, Kwara State, Nigeria. It is the 77th university registered by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and the 95th accredited university in Nigeria.

The university was established by the administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2009 and is more than a typical Nigerian university. It is designed to be a hub for community service and startups. In a country where the core values ​​of volunteering and community engagement are undervalued, the university identifies itself as part of the community and acts as the director of community development with the aim of aims to mobilize the community, identify assessment strategies, and identify needs in the community so speakers can use their expertise to directly impact the community. KWASU held its first convocation on June 1, 2013, and established the KWASU Alumni Association with Oyinloye Damilare Peter as its pioneering president.

History/Organization

The journey towards establishing a public university in Kwara State began on July 11, 2007, when the Governor of Kwara State Bukola Saraki established a planning committee under the leadership of former Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi to prepare the basis for the establishment of Kwara state university. Kwara State University. . The bill for Kwara State University was promulgated on 24 December 2008. The certificate and executive instrument of the university were issued on 9 February 2009 by the National University Commission (NUC). The first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, who until his appointment as Dean of the Department of African American Studies at Western Illinois University, Macomb, USA, took office on July 28, 2009. Current Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, who, prior to his appointment as a seasoned academic and international diplomat, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari was the school’s pioneering Principal, Johnson Adeyunmi, Principal was appointed on Monday, May 25, 2020, by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. When fully operational, the school is expected to operate academic operations from three campuses located in Malete, Ilesha-Baruba, and Osi-Opin.

The Malete campus is the main campus and houses the College of Pure and Applied Sciences, the College of Information and Communication Technology, and the College of Education. The Osi campus (Ekiti local government) will be home to the College of Engineering, College of Humanities, Management, and Social Sciences. The Baruba campus (Baruten local government) will house the College of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences.

Academics

Kwara State University has several academic centers. One such center is the CEERMS Center for Ecology and Management and Environmental Research, which recently received a UNESCO grant of $15.3 million to use over a six-year period to create the Chair of the UNESCO Alternative Energy Program. This grant is for alternative energy research and will be administered by the Center for Ecological and Environmental Research Management Research at Kwara State University (CEERMS). Other centers of the university are the Center for Oral Communication in Africa, the Institute of Asian Studies, the Institute for Advanced Military Studies, the Institute of Japanese Language and Culture, the Ibrahim Gambari Center for United Nations and Regional Studies, the Center for Pre-Graduation and Remedial Studies, Center for Human Rights and Law, Center for Modernity and Religion, Center for the Conservation of Art, Center for Grant Projects, Center for Educational Innovation Education and Research, KWASU International Publishing Research Institute, Center for Innovative Technologies, Center for Innovation and International Studies, Center for Bio-IT Applications and entrepreneurship.

The Center for Entrepreneurship, the first of its kind in Nigeria, aims to prepare graduates to identify and realize opportunities through a job creation orientation. The university works with students who are still in college, to propose and implement a project. When students graduate, the university collaborates with students to carry out various projects. It has also created a student startup fund for this purpose. Currently, Kwara State University offers the opportunity for students to present their research projects to the school as part of University Research Day, an annual event where students present their research papers. to apply for funding and gain global recognition.
