History Of Kogi State University

Kogi State University located in Anyigba, is a public university in Kogi, Nigeria. It was founded in 1999 by Prince Abubakar Audu, the former governor of the state. At the time of its founding, it was known as Kogi State University. It was then named Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in 2002, after the incumbent Governor of Kogi State, who announced the establishment and later renamed Kogi State University. (KSU) in 2003 by former Governor Ibrahim Idris, then renamed Prince Abubakar Audu University in 2020 by Governor Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello in honor of the late Abubakar Audu.

Professor S.K. Okwute (Professor of Chemistry) was the first Vice-Chancellor (2000-2005) and is currently returning to the University of Abuja. Professor F.S. Idachaba (OFR), a professor of agricultural economics, took over from 2005 to 2008 and then retired to work for his foundation (the F.S. Idachaba Foundation for Research and Fellowship) before his death. Professor I. Isah (Professor of Chemical Pathology), from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, took over in October 2008, he was replaced by Professor Mohammed Abdulkadir from Ado Bayero University. The outgoing vice-chancellor is Professor Marietu Tenuche.

In 2017, the KSU branch of the Academic Employees Union of Universities (ASUU) was caught in an industrial crisis with the state government due to a lack of pay for several months. The state government accused the professors of politicizing the labor dispute and ordered them to return to the classroom immediately or their positions would be vacant for new applicants. After days of refusing to return to the classroom, Governor Bello, the School’s Guest, announced the ban on ASUU and his withdrawal from the national ASUU.

Prince Abubakar Audu University started its academic activities in April 2000 with six faculties:
Faculty of agriculture, literature and humanities, law, management sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences. The university has added an already established medical faculty with offices and an extensive laboratory complex. The Center for Pre-Graduation and Degree Studies was established under the current administration of the university to run degree and foundation programs. Students in the pre-university program can be admitted to the degree program if they pass the internal exams and do not need to take the post-UTME exams.

All faculties, supplementary centers, and diplomas are brought together in one place as the university is planned as a city in its own right. no odd school points. However, there are objections that the university is being decentralized by moving some of its faculties, especially the Faculty of Medicine, to the western or central part of the state.

The school offers a wide range of courses in specialties such as medicine, law, microbiology, biochemistry, geology (engineering and geosciences combined), physics, mathematics, computer science, and public administration. , humanities kinetics, industrial chemistry, statistics, business administration, accounting, banking and finance, theater arts, food, nutrition and family science, agricultural engineering, farming, animal husbandry, soil science, food science and technology, fishing and forestry, Islamic studies, religion and philosophy, English, history and international studies, sociology, mass media, economics, and chemistry. 98% of the courses offered at the university are accredited by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC).

Although not well known, the university is among the best in Africa, with several of its faculties ranked as the best in Nigeria by professional and academic bodies of Nigeria. A few years ago the Faculty of Law was declared the best in Nigeria and remains one of the best in the following years. In addition, the geology department has been ranked among the best in Africa, along with Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan. It currently has a library containing a large collection of expensive specialized books and documents and a geological station, both provided by Shell Petroleum Development Company as an appreciation of the attitude develop particularly strong intellectual abilities of the department.
