Godfrey Okoye University (GO University) was founded in 2009 by Professor Dr. Christian Anieke for the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. The university received its license to operate on November 3, 2009 from the National University Commission (NUC), of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in Nigeria. It was the first university of a Catholic diocese in Africa.
In 2009, the school started enrolling 215 students and by the end of 2012 had accepted 1,200 students.

On December 1, 2013, the GOU kicked off a week-long program of activities to celebrate its first convening. 100 students were rewarded in the closing ceremony on December 7, 2013.
GOU is a member of the Commission of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVC).
