Ajayi Crowther University, also known as ACU, is a private university located in Oyo, Oyo State, Nigeria.

Historical background

Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo was founded by the Diocesan Council of Supra (West) of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), having its roots in the defunct CMS* training institution, Abeokuta and St. Andrews, Oyo.

CMS (Christian Mission Society)
The school started as a CMS training facility in Abeokuta in 1853, from there it was moved to Lagos (1868 to 1896). In March 1896, it was moved to Oyo in 1920. At first, the University of St. Andrews, Oyo trained holders of a Class II Teacher’s Certificate while the Divine Course for the Training of Church Pastors was added to the curriculum between 1910 and 1942, and ownership of the School was restored. moved from CMS, London to the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

In 1977, the government took control and management of all schools in the Federation of Nigeria and with this development the Church of Nigeria was stripped of its ownership of the College. However, the interest of the College Boys’ Association of St. Andrews (SACOBA) and by extension the Church for the growth and development of St. Andrews remained unabated. So, in response to SACOBA’s petition, the former Oyo State government converted the institution into an NCE campus in 1980 and a full-fledged College of Education in 1985.

On September 7, 1999, the Church in Nigeria approved SACOBA’s request to establish Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo on the site of St. Andrews, Oyo is owned by the Church. After meeting the stringent criteria set forth by the National University Commission (NUC) for the establishment of universities in Nigeria, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) was granted a license to operate as a university. private school in Nigeria on January 7, 2005.

The university is named after the late Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African bishop to have translated the Bible into Yoruba. His episcopal office covered the entire West African subcontinent. Former ACU Vice-Chancellor Rt. Rev. Teacher. Dapo Folorunsho Asaju. His wife’s name is Barr. Mrs. Harriet Asaju. His tenure was from 2015 to 2020. During his tenure, Ajayi Crowther has seen extraordinary growth as many faculties have been merged into the school. Other courses have also been approved by the NUC.
