Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola on Tuesday launched a five-year strategic plan for the FG, ministry, and its services/consultations to tackle insecurity in the country.
In a statement by Afonja Fatai Ajibola, spokesman for the ministry, the minister said the Interior Ministry is an integral part of the national security and prosperity of the country.
He said this is done through four services – the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) which monitors arrivals and departures at the country’s borders, ensuring that those who have the potential to cause harm to Nigerians and their health from the outside will be prevented. /b]
The minister further added that the Nigerian Security Civil Defense Force (NSCDC) complements the police and other law enforcement agencies in fighting crime and intelligence gathering, while the Service Nigerian Training Service (NCoS) detains people who are legally convicted or awaiting trial.
While listing the role of services in maintaining national security, the Minister also said that the Federal Fire Service (FFS) responds to fires and other emergencies, adding that a division within the Ministry of Marriage Registration and Regulation of Foreign Presence in Nigeria.
The minister acknowledged that there are still security concerns, noting that thousands of cases that could plunge the country into chaos are being handled daily and destroyed in their infancy. Earlier in his speech, the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, said existing records show that the Home Office has been operating without a strategic plan to date.
Dr. Belgore added that Nigeria now has the opportunity to improve its security architecture thanks to the Home Office’s strategic plan, developed in collaboration with key stakeholders. He pointed this out; “The implementation of this plan is critical to achieving the goal and the leadership of the Department must take concrete actions to achieve this effect.”
