The European Union (EU) in Nigeria has denied a report that the EU, in partnership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), is calling for the removal of the President of the Election Commission. The EU, in a letter now circulating on social media, is said to have noted that Saturday’s election was marred by numerous instances of election fraud, lack of transparency, and operational failures. constitution, blatant violation of democratic principles.
The letter allegedly reads: “The EU Office for the Evaluation of Democracy recommends taking the following steps to remedy the situation:
of INEC’s current president, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Evaluate election results and make corrections or conduct by-elections.
“The disqualification of President-elect and presidential candidate of the Comprehensive Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for serious electoral misconduct, as provided for in the Nigerian constitution.”
However, the EU in Nigeria rejected the claim saying it did not come from the commission.
Speaking to reporters about the development, the EU press official in Nigeria, Agnes Doka, said the European Union has not entered into any alliance with the NDI as stated in the letter.
She added that the EU had nothing to do with the aforementioned letter regarding the just-ended general election allegedly announced by Eric Mamer on 2 March 2023.
Shortly after, the EU tweeted a notice calling the letter a forgery.
