The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari will receive the Democracy Icon Award, in recognition of his achievements in defending and promoting democracy in the country. sub-region.
This was revealed during a bilateral meeting with President Buhari on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries taking place in Doha, Qatar.
Embalo noted that the award recognizes Buhari’s achievements in maintaining and promoting democracy as a system of government throughout the subregion.
According to him, the Nigerian leader has done more than anything else to support democratic governments in West Africa, just as he did in the fight against the emergence of undemocratic regimes.
“For this, said the ECOWAS Chairman, President Buhari will have his name on the Roll of Honor in the community’s new headquarters building upon its completion in Abuja, so that future generations of West African citizens will know about the greatness he achieved and to copy his laudable examples,” the statement read in part.
In response, the President welcomed the proposal, stressing that democracy is a reliable means of achieving national development because it unites diverse peoples and cultures.
