Despite a cautionary reminder to Kano State Governor-elect Abba Kabir Yusuf about issuing the order, he issued a notice suspending public debt to domestic and international lenders.
He asked them not to accept any loan applications without his consent.
Yusuf also made a similar point about the illegal construction of buildings in public places.
However, the advice was quickly rejected by Umar Ganduje’s government, reminding him that they were still in power and that he had to wait until May 29.
But in the second announcement included in a statement signed by the governor-elect’s press secretary, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Abba insisted the announcement was necessary. The statement reads as follows:
“Effective from March 18 to May 29, no lender (domestic or international) has approved and extended any loan to the Kano State Government without the express consent of the upcoming administration.
“Any such lending facility is approved and granted to the Kano State Government between the date of the election and the day of the oath of office without the explicit knowledge and consent of the incoming administration. will not be respected by the new government.
“All existing Kano State Government lenders should note that all terms and conditions of all existing lending facilities will be renegotiated by the new administration under the guidance of the supervisory board. audit/review the use of each loan.”
He added that the advice was issued in the public interest.
