Abia Gov, Ikpeazu Sacks Political Appointees

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of the State of Abia approved the immediate dissolution of all his political appointees in the state.
State Government (SSG) Secretary Chris Ezem revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

Ezem, a lawyer, said those affected include:
special assistant, senior special assistant, special advisor, and technical advisor.

This implies that the state commissioners are not affected.

“The Governor continues to direct the State Accountant General to ensure immediate payment of salaries in March 2023 for all appointees,” Ezem said. GSU said the governor thanked the expired appointees for their contributions and service to the state and wished them success in their future endeavors.

The layoffs come days after Ikpeazu Okey Ahiwe’s anointed gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lost the state gubernatorial election on March 18 to Alex Otti of the Labor Party. (LP).

Otti, the LP candidate, collected a total of 172,386 votes to defeat his closest opponent, and the PDP candidate, Ahiwe, collected a total of 88,174 votes.

Recall that Governor Ikpeazu also lost his senatorial candidate in the southern district of Abia to Enyinnaya Abaribe of the Great Alliance of All Progressives.

The firing of political appointees also comes just 24 hours after Otti, the governor-elect, sounded the alarm that the state government is engaged in a late-night job race in the state. However, Ikpeazu denied the allegation, pointing out that even if the allegation was true, his administration, “with executive power to manage state affairs” has the right to hire government employees if they want to.
